Burnt Pine

Literature that burns like wildfire.

This online lit mag is a friend and a mentor to my crew over here at Sonder. They’ve published some solid writers as they aim to publish work that will spark a change in others. With their wildfire thematic they are able to work with plenty of pieces worth getting published, which is why their job can be so hard (as for any lit mag).

Go check these guys out, they’re pretty stellar. They have an extremely professional way of doing their work and of course the team behind the magazine are writers too! I guess one of my absolute favorite things about Burnt Pine is how similar they are to us. Both of us are each trying to help other writers names out there in the writing world. We need more love for mags like this.

Slaughterhouse Five

There were two peepholes inside the airlock-with yellow eyes pressed to them. There
was a speaker on the wall. The Tralfamadorians had no voice boxes. They communicated
telepathically. They were able to talk to Billy by means of a computer and a sort of
electric organ which made every Earthling speech sound.

‘Welcome aboard, Mr. Pilgrim,’ said the loudspeaker. ‘Any questions?’

Billy licked his lips, thought a while, inquired at last: ‘Why me? ’

That is a very Earthling question to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why vow? Why us for that
matter? Why anything ? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs
trapped in amber?’

‘Yes.’ Billy in fact, had a paperweight in his office which was a blob of polished amber
with three ladybugs embedded in it.

‘Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment. There is no why.’

Slaughterhouse Five – Kurt Vonnegut

Happiest moment of your life

“The best way to pay for a lovely moment is to enjoy it.” -Richard Bach

The happiest moment of your life so far, that’s your prompt this week.  Think about all five sense (sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch) and really search for why it was such a happy moment.  Whether it be from something as simple as eating the best ice cream you’ve had or something much more complex search for the small details, the way your chest felt lighter, the cool breeze stinging your face etc. . . . This is vague on purpose, if you need more shoot us a comment, start a discussion.  Spread some (((good vibes))) into the world, it needs it right now.

Thursdays are Poem Days

“Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible”
Good Bones – Maggie Smith
Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.
I want

Submission guidelines are super important, if they weren’t nobody would have them. The number one rule to submitting to a magazine is “follow the submission guidelines”. Most likely if the guidelines are not followed the editors won’t take the time to read the work, they most likely throw it away immediately.

Check out our submission guidelines and make sure to submit!
